Choice Hotels continued the national expansion of its upscale Cambria brand with the opening of Cambria Hotel Detroit Downtown.
The 154-room hotel, developed by Koucar Management, is an adaptive reuse of The Walker-Roehrig Building, an office property originally built in the 1930s.
Situated in Detroit’s central business district at 600 West Lafayette, the hotel is near the corporate offices for Ally Finance, Quicken Loans, Ford Motor Company and General Motors. It’s also near Wayne State University and the University of Detroit.
“While best known for its automotive tradition, the Motor City is home to a wonderful breadth of industries — from engineering and healthcare to finance and technology — and Detroit's newest downtown hotel perfectly situates guests at this intersection of commerce and culture,” Janis Cannon, senior vice president of upscale brands at Choice Hotels, said in a company press release.
The property, designed to reflect Detroit’s Art Deco period, features more than 18,000 square feet of meeting and event space, a fitness center, a self-serve lobby food and beverage marketplace and two on-site restaurants, Detroit Taco and the Mediterranean concept Cibo. Additionally, two bars, the Beve Detroit lobby bar and the Cielo Detroit rooftop bar, will open in summer 2023.
The hotel is Cambria’s first property in downtown Detroit, though there is an existing Cambria about 30 miles north in the city’s Shelby Township suburb.
There are more than 65 other Cambria locations in the U.S., including in Chicago, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. Recently, Choice Hotels expanded the brand to Georgia, opening the state’s first Cambria in Savannah. Additionally, there are some 70 hotels in the Cambria pipeline.
